LECOM Biomedical Sciences Post Baccalaureate Program

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), offers a unique educational program intended to increase opportunities and options in science and health-related fields for college graduates. This program, the Biomedical Sciences Post Baccalaureate Program (Postbac), may be used by prospective applicants:

  • To initiate a career in the basic sciences, either in industrial or academic settings.
  • To supplement a non-science undergraduate record with an adequate science preparation to become eligible for admission to any of the health fields.
  • To enhance the possibilities of being accepted into a health professions school by demonstrating added competence in the required sciences.

The Postbac application form can be accessed by clicking here (Postbac Application Form).

Curriculum And Faculty

All coursework within the Postbac Program curriculum is presented on-campus by doctoral level LECOM faculty. Approximately 10-15 LECOM faculty participate in this program, which ensures opportunity for small group interaction and a close working relationship with the faculty.

The Postbac Program is a two-semester, non-degree course of study designed to enhance the science background of participating students. However, the Postbac Program is an approved certificate program authorized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Education. Classes are held daily Monday through Friday from 5:00pm - 8:00pm for two 16-week semesters in LECOM's state-of-the-art medical school facilities. Classes are not held on designated holidays, and other holidays or occasions as so identified.

Within each 16-week semester, there are approximately 60 class sessions for a total of 180 contact hours, or 15 credit hours based on LECOM's standard of calculation (12 contact hours per each credit hour). Postbac students must adhere to all policies and regulations of LECOM as described in the LECOM Student Catalog/Handbook.

While the Postbac Program does provide an opportunity for the student to demonstrate academic capability, it does not assure admission to any professional school. As such, successful completion of the Postbac Program does not guarantee admission to the medical program at LECOM. However, successful candidates who apply to LECOM through AACOMAS and meet all other standards and requirements for admission will be assured of an interview.
